How to Save an Underwatered Tree in 2 Ways

With millions of trees in homes across the United States and the world, it is essential to know how to care for them properly.

Most trees will thrive if properly watered from birth, but there can be instances where you forget to water or do not have enough time to do so every day. The tree may show signs of stress and seem dead, but there are tips and tricks which you can use to ensure the survival of your tree.

Here are some tips on how to save an underwatered tree from Salisbury’s tree service company.

What Causes Tree Dehydration?

If you live in a dry climate, your trees are more likely to suffer from dehydration. The soil around the tree acts as a natural buffer and protects it from too much water loss. However, your tree can dehydrate if you have a drought or other event that causes the soil to lose moisture.

The type of tree also makes a difference in how quickly dehydration affects your trees. Some trees have larger tree roots that allow them to retain water longer than other trees.

Owners that over-tend their trees may also render them susceptible to dehydration due to excess water or poor drainage around the base of the tree that could cause root rot.

How to Save an Underwatered or Dry Tree by Manual Watering

So, how can you save an underwatered tree? You can save an underwatered tree and prevent it from dying by doing the following:

  1. Check for yellow or brown leaves on the top of your tree. If you have any leaves that are brown, yellowing, or curling, this is a sign that your tree is not getting enough water.
  2. Be sure to water your tree every 7 to 10 days in the spring and summer months and every two weeks in the fall and winter months.
  3. Water deeply enough so the entire root system is moistened at least 2 inches deep (5 cm).
  4. Use a watering can or soaker hose with a narrow spray nozzle so that you don’t cause damage to the bark by letting too much water accumulate on it at once. Do not over-water your tree because this will cause root rot and kill them off completely!

Saving Dry Underwatered Trees Using Drip Hose Systems

If you’re looking for something more permanent, drip systems are great because they’re so easy to install and deliver constant water over time.

To set up a drip system:

  1. Find out where the roots are under the ground using an auger or digging tool around your tree trunk.
  2. Make a hole in the dirt slightly bigger than the end of your soaker hose so it’ll fit snugly into place.
  3. Attach your hose (or tubing) to this opening and run it through to where you want to position it on top of your lawn. This will be about 2 inches away from the water source.
  4. Make sure not too much pressure builds up inside this line so that no leaks occur from excess force against any bends or curves along its route.
